The fitness center features a range of equipment including treadmills, stationary spin bikes, a rower, a recumbent bike, and an elliptical machine. Strength training equipment includes squat/bench racks, a multi-height squat rack, a hack squat machine, pull-downs, seated row, and more. Dumbbells and Olympic barbells and free weights are also available. A variety of functional training equipment include strength training bands, medicine and stability balls, battle ropes, and soft- and hard-shell plyometric boxes.
Opened in 2005, the Upper School’s gymnasium is home court to the Dragons badminton, basketball, wrestling, and volleyball teams. Physical education classes utilize the space as well and is available for private rental.
Glenelg Country School’s 90-acre campus is an important part of the educational experience. Supporting classroom instruction, our natural resources are used to inspire and enrich learning opportunities for every student. The pond functions as an outdoor classroom where students explore the ecosystem of our open-meadow wetland habitat.
The playground behind the Primary Building provides age-appropriate activities through exploration, physical challenges, and creative play. Whether it’s riding strider balance bikes, scaling a climbing wall, or creating a puppet show, students experience safe, fun, and educational activities which strengthen their bodies and sharpen their imaginations.
The Lower School gymnasium provides a space to Lower and Middle School students for physical education and athletic competitions. In addition to the basketball court, there is an indoor slide and the Exploratorium, a glass-enclosed meeting space.
The Middle School, located between the Manor House and Upper School, offers a fantastic view of the campus. The location provides students with easy access to the Music Garden, the outdoor theater, and tennis courts.
Our fully equipped athletic facilities include a state-of-the-art turf field, grass fields, a baseball field, and two gymnasiums. Dragon Stadium, featuring a turf field and six-lane competition track, was opened in 2013.
Lower School students utilize the multipurpose room to participate in the performing arts, continue annual school traditions such as Turkey Day, and expand learning exercises and activities throughout the school year.
The Upper School building’s opened in 1986. Three years later, GCS graduated its first senior class. The 60,000 sq. ft. Upper School academic and athletic addition was completed in 2005. In the Upper School, students experience a wide variety of courses in humanities, science, math, world languages, civic leadership and more. Our stimulating academic curriculum keeps students motivated and engaged toward their collegiate goals.
Through the front doors of the Middle School, a spacious and bright lobby area serves as the hub of the building, with classrooms to the left on both levels and the arts wing to the right.
The Middle School building opened in 1997 and offers 15 classrooms, including two science labs and art studio, a music room, a technology lab, an Idea Lab for STEAM activities, and a library. The building also includes the 350-seat Mulitz Theater, which serves the central hub for performing arts in all three divisions.
Applying a project-based curriculum, the Lower School integrates lessons so students can make connections between multiple subjects and the world around them. Students develop a strong academic foundation while gaining important social skills and self-confidence.
Teachers arrange classrooms in a way that best suits the needs of their students and their teaching style. This flexibility allows for groupwork and project-based learning for classes of with no more than 18 students.
Our degreed teachers work closely with students in a small classroom setting, with no more than a 6:1 student to teacher ratio. Little Dragons explore everything from art and technology to physical education, music, and the natural world.
Our youngest students begin their journey at Glenelg Country School here in the Primary Building. Completed in 2002, and situated at the far back of campus, the building is home to our Little Dragons, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten children. In addition to their classrooms, students enjoy regular visits to the Tinker Lab and library, the art studio, the multipurpose room (for physical education and assemblies) and stimulating outdoor learning and play areas.
The elementary years serve as the academic foundation for student success, just as our historic Manor House serves as our school’s iconic anchor. While the original house dates back to 1740, the building as we know it today was constructed in 1854 to resemble a castle in Glenelg, Scotland. The Manor House offers classrooms for Grades 1–5, as well as an art studio, a music room, a tinker lab, and a spacious multi-purpose room.
Students engage in learning opportunities that ready their minds for higher education. A wide variety of outstanding courses in humanities, science, math, world languages, civic leadership, and more keep students motivated and focused on their collegiate goals. Some classrooms utilize discussion tables, as seen here, ideal for our integrated humanities program, allowing for discussion in an encouraging, open-minded environment.
As the name suggests, the Forum allows for frequent all-school assemblies. Students are often seen working in this area during their free period. Founders Kingdon and Mary Gould designed the building to allow for plenty of natural light and a view of the natural surroundings through large windows in all classrooms. On the upper level, there are classrooms for humanities and math as well as visual arts studios.
Five science labs offer ample space for instructional and experimental learning. Our well-equipped Innovation Lab provides a space for students to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics in our comprehensive STEAM program. Specialized subjects such as civil engineering and architecture, software development, 3D art, and forensics allow students to refine their focus in preparation for college.
With the generous gifts from the Classes of 2019 and 2020, a landscaped patio area enhances the outdoor space for students to have lunch, study, or relax. On warm days, classes meet at the picnic tables and volleyball, tetherball, frisbee, and yard games take place during lunch and free time.
